MateRate

MateRate

MateRate is an all-in-one platform designed to simplify the process of choosing what to watch, whether it’s a movie or a TV show.

By combining content from multiple streaming services (like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+, etc) and using artificial intelligence, MateRate tailors personalized recommendations based on each user’s unique tastes. This means you can find what to watch and where to watch it without needing to switch between different apps.

Branding

Emotions are at the heart of the user’s connection with the app. Our goal was to create an identity that captures the feelings a cinematic experience evokes—whether positive or negative, as both types of feedback are crucial. With this in mind, I developed a custom, fluid lettering design featuring friendly curves, ending with a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other.

To ensure the rating and recommendation system is intuitive and globally relatable, we simplified emotions into a 5-point scale, ranging from “Wow” to “Boo,” using onomatopoeias to convey each stage. When a recommendation is given, it appears as an outline; once rated by the user, it transforms into a speech balloon, reflecting the user’s input.

To make the AI recommendations feel more personal, we introduced a character named Mate, your virtual cinephile buddy. Mate learns your preferences and guides you to the best titles to watch. This quirky, charismatic character was illustrated by Domingos Octaviano.

Onboarding

MateRate’s onboarding is a fundamental part of the app experience, designed to tailor content to the user from the very beginning. After creating an account, users are welcomed by a friendly bot that guides them through a series of quick questions to set up their preferences and customize the categories that appear on the first screen. The bot asks about the frequency of movie theater visits, willingness to pay for renting or buying movies, favorite genres, interest in TV shows, and which streaming services the user subscribes to.

Next, users are prompted to rate at least 10 movies and 5 TV shows from a screen filled with titles—this initial input is the minimum required to generate their first personalized recommendations. This thoughtful onboarding process ensures that each user’s experience with MateRate is uniquely tailored from the start, enhancing the overall satisfaction and relevance of recommendations.

The 1st Screen

MateRate’s first screen is both a social feed and a discovery tool. The top vertical rectangles offer quick access to the app’s three main categories: movie theaters, films, and TV shows. Below, users can see what their friends have recently watched, commented on, and rated. The next section features curated categories tailored to the user’s preferences and habits, with priority given to the most relevant content.
